Bureaucracy (2020)

Found Object, Shredded Paper, Moving Image

‘Bureaucracy’ is a continuation of my investigation into internalised surveillance in relation to the UK welfare system – specifically Universal Credit. This piece comments on the role of the documenting, storing, and destruction of information from the surveillance of claimants. I aim to encourage conversations around the accusations that the DWP tried to cover up what was happening to vulnerable people when they destroyed reports on people who killed themselves after benefits were stopped. Up to 50 reviews into deaths following harsh sanctions have been shredded.
